Sculpted Embroidery

Sculpted embroidery is a concept that I developed which is similar to embossing but keeps the outline fairly narrow so that objects may be placed close together. The dictionary definition of the word "sculpt" is "to create a three-dimensional representation of an object using solid material" in this case, stitches. My first thought was to do some fonts. Then a request came in for a hummingbird and these sets just seemed create themselves! I have tried to show as many different applications as possible, and will comment on each below.

This was done on lightweight polar fleece for a pillow top. It was especially digitized to accomodate metallic threads so do not be afraid to use it that way. It is part of the Sculpted Beauty 5x7 set.

This photo shows the two main types of stitching used in Sculpted designs. The leaves and their veining are created with a running stitch, while a light fill stitch is used for the flower. This design is found in both sizes of Sculpted Beauty.

This sweatshirt looks so elegant with the sculpted work on it - I think for dark sweatshirts I would use a thread color just a bit lighter than the sweatshirt color, and for light sweatshirts, use a shade just a tiny bit darker. If you do not have embroidery thread that is exactly the color you need, you can use high quality sewing thread as I did here. This design is part of the Sculpted Beauty 5x7 set.

Here is an example of darker stitching on light colored fleece...just another option you have.

All of the Sculpted Beauty designs that can be multicolored, have color stops so that you can stitch them either in monochrome or as pictured here.

Sculpted embroidery works on toweling. My recommendation is to use toweling with short loop height and as dense as possible.

It also is quite dramatic on just plain denim, as this blouse yoke shows. I put a thin layer of batting between the denim and the stabilizer and I really was surprised at how defined it looks.

Here are some potholders. I used tearaway stabilizer on these, and I am sure that placemats would be just as lovely.

I hope you have made it this far down the page... aren't these book covers awesome?! The brown one is suede cloth and the maroon one is polar fleece... Honestly, I would not use fleece unless it is heavy and does not stretch much. Denim, corduroy, or the suede cloth are better for this. If you like these designs and would like me to create a special one for you, please contact me by email, and I will be glad to send you an estimate. I tried doing a small lowercase alphabet, but when you placed the letters side by side, they do not look as finished as what I have done with the bookcovers where the outlining goes around the entire word and there are no spaces between letters. Let me know what you think of these, and if you have ideas or needs for other sets, I will be glad to consider any ideas. I am very excited about the possibilities of this type of embroidery. Thanks for stopping by!
